A Love Letter to My Crocs, and Why They’re the Best Recovery Shoe

A Love Letter to My Crocs, and Why They’re the Best Recovery Shoe

BY NICOLE BETHUNE

For me, recovery shoes are a non-negotiable piece of backpacking gear. And while there are many to choose from, nothing feels better after a long hike than sliding my feet into my coral pink Crocs. I’ve had them since the early 00’s when they were all the rage, and while we broke up for a couple years, we’re back together.

Growing up as a competitive runner, my Crocs were a godsend post-race. I could shed my running shoes and traverse hilly cross-country courses cheering on my teammates in something vastly more comfortable. They let my feet breath and relax, while also providing necessary support and cushion to assist in recovery.

But people loved to poke fun at them. So, after years of being heckled for my choice of footwear and a strong desire to fit in when I entered college, I swapped my trusty companions for a pair of sandals. The Crocs stuck around—I’d wear them in the judgment-free comfort of my dorm room—but their days outside were limited.

Until I started backpacking. Now, they’re a trip staple, tucked into the top of my pack, or carabineered to the side. Between the soft foam to cradle sore feet, deployable adventure strap, minimal weight, and generous fit, it’s hard to find an affordable recovery shoe that checks more boxes. Not to mention the fact that they are surprisingly durable. You would think after a decade of abuse they would be looking worse for wear, but they have persevered, remaining comfy as ever.

Most recently, I hauled them with me on a 17-day trek through the Himalaya. After hiking through rain, snow, and significant elevation changes, saying that I looked forward to dropping my pack, yanking off my boots, and slipping into my beloved Crocs at the end of each day is an understatement.

So, despite all the new and trendy options out there, I’ll be sticking with the shoes that have been with me through thick and thin, dirt stains and all.

I had a pair of knock-off crocs (Sketchers version) as my camp shoes last year for my AT thru hike. They were, indeed, the best recovery shoes. I couldn’t wait to get into camp each night and let my feet breathe.
